Bruce Springsteen And Stevie Van Zandt Featured In Upcoming Asbury Park Documentary
Asbury Park also features footage from a recent performance by Springsteen and Van Zandt.
Asbury Park: Riot, Redemption, Rock n' Roll, a documentary featuring Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Van Zandt's reflections on the history of Asbury Park, will be released worldwide on May 22 and 29.
Asbury Park follows the founding of the New Jersey seaside town that's home to the famous Upstage Club and Stoney Pony, which have hosted rock acts like Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi. The film takes a sprawling look at the town, from its rise as a Jersey Shore destination to race riots in the '60s, and how the events impacted the music scene.
Springsteen famously raised the profile of the town in his debut album Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J., yet he was not featured in the initial cut of the documentary, an issue that was later addressed when he was interviewed for the doc inside the Upstage Club.
Asbury Park also features Southside Johnny Lyon and David Sancious, as well as footage from Springteen, Van Zandt and Southside Johnny's 2017 performance at the Paramount Theater in 2017.
Springsteen recently revealed at a Netflix event that he had written music for the E Street Band for the first time in seven years and that fans could expect a tour in the future.
"I wrote almost an album’s worth of material for the band. And it came out of just… I mean, I know where it came from, but at the same time, it just came out of almost nowhere," said Springsteen while in a conversation with Martin Scorcese. "And it was good, you know. I had about two weeks of those little daily visitations, and it was so nice. It makes you so happy. You go, 'Fuck, I’m not fucked, all right? There’ll be another tour!'"
