Lupita Nyong'o stars as Ugandan mother Harriet Mutesi who works relentlessly in the impoverished slums to provide her family with the most basic living. Her daughter Phino (newcomer Madina Nalwanga) aspires to become more but lacks the resources to do so. One day Phino stumbles upon a chess class and is instantly intrigued by the game. She's invited in by tutor Robert Katende (David Oyelowo) and her superior talent for the game becomes apparent. As she rises through the ranks, her mother fears imminent disappointment and is reluctant to get carried away but Phino embodies against the odds defiance and determination to achieve a better life for her and her family.
