TV SHOW OF THE DAY: The School (RTE 2, 10.35)
The latest comedy series to begin airing on RTE, The School is a mockumentary style show about a dysfunctional Irish primary school.
Dominic English is the straight-laced new principal at St. Colmcilles Primary School who intends to "whip the school into shape" ahead of its annual nativity play. As the first "outsider" to be appointed to this role however, he is forced to acclimatise to a strange school and an even stranger staff. First, being made unaware that a documentary is being made, he must also deal with secretary Briege Daly, who has decided he will make the perfect husband, while a jealous and arrogant teacher, Mr. Hegarty seeks to intimidate and undermine him constantly.
The School was created by CCCahoots, a Cork-based comedy troupe whose previous work includes the RTE Storyland web series (R)onanism. It also marks a new shift in how RTE is attempting to broadcast original content, as it was the first series to be made available online last Friday (17th November) ahead of the televised release.
The School airs tonight on RTE 2 at 10.35pm.
