This fortnight in the film section: Jude Law talks villainy and politics
With Jude Law taking over both stage and screen, Roe McDermott sat down with him for a chat about his latest film King Arthur in which he plays the manipulative villain Vortigern. In the new film, King Arthur, portrayed by Charlie Hunnam, faces off against his uncle, Law's Vortigern, in a battle for the crown. As with seemingly everything these days, Law does take a minute to reflect on how telling the tale of a battle for power relates to the current political climate.
"The film is very timely," he notes. "It's warning us against egomaniacs and racism and division. As with all interesting villains, Vortigern doesn't see himself as a bad guy. He sees other people as a sort of distraction or collateral damage to his attainment of total control."
But, according to Jude, the film still holds a message of hope for us to all take to heart. "At the story's heart is a sense of hope that somewhere there is a rightful leader who will take us all to a place where we are better off and looked after. As long as hope is alive, I think we're always going to be all right."
