The Original Lois Lane, Noel Neill, Passes Away at 95
Noel Neill was the first on-screen incarnation of Superman's sweetheart Lois Lane back in 1948.
The news of her death has been confirmed. Neill passed away last Sunday at the age of 95 in her Arizona home.
After battling a long illness, her long-time manager and autobiographer Larry Ward has paid tribute to the Superman star; "Noel truly was Lois Lane, and for many of us, she was the first working woman seen on television. Few of her fans actually knew her real name, almost always simply calling her 'Lois' to which she would unfailing answer with a bright smile and a kind word. It was more than a role to her. 'Lois' was someone she believed in and a character she happily and warmly embraced," Ward fondly reminisced.
Neill had a long history with the character of Lois Lane. Her first appearance as the Lane lady was back in 1948 alongside Kirk Alyn as Superman. She reprised this role in 1950 and again in the TV Series Adventures of Superman in 1953 and 1958 this time opposite George Reeves. She made appearances in an uncredited role as Lois Lane's mother in the 1978 Christopher Reeves film and in 2006's Superman Returns.
Neill made public appearances up until the age of 90 and was honored with a statue of her likeness in the town of Metropolis, Illinois. Her death has been widely mourned by those who remember her fondly as 'sweet, warm and wonderful'.
