Rod Stewart thanks King Charles for putting ‘little ratbag in his place’ on US trip
British rock and pop singer-songwriter praised the King for what he called a "wonderful performance" during a recent trip to America
Rod Stewart told King Charles he was “absolutely superb" during his recent state visit to the US, adding that the King "put that little ratbag in his place" in an apparent dig at US President Donald Trump.
“May I say, well done in the Americas. You were superb, absolutely superb; put that little ratbag in his place,” he said at an event on Monday celebrating the 50th anniversary of the King's Trust at the Royal Albert Hall.
King Charles appeared to laugh off the remarks as Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood smiled next to the pair.
The King addressed the US Congress during the visit, in which he and Camilla were hosted by Donald Trump and his wife Melania.
These remarks seemed to be retaliation to Donald Trump's frequent criticism of NATO allies. King Charles strongly defended the alliance by highlighting shared historical sacrifices.
He explicitly reminded lawmakers of the immediate aftermath of 9/11, when NATO invoked Article 5 for the first time, British and American forces answered the call together, standing "shoulder to shoulder".
"If it wasn't for us, you'd be speaking French”, The King later joked to the hosts.
The Scottish singer also enforced the point to Queen Camilla.
"I was just congratulating your husband on his wonderful performance in the Americas – so great, so brave, so proud,” he said.
