Robbert Mapplethorpe Biopic gets a new actress for Patti Smith role
The iconic punk star will not be involved, however.
With just a week to go before shooting, relatively unknown actress Marianne Rendón is replacing Zosia Mamet as Smith in a new film.
Matt Smyth is already in place to play the titular photographer who had an infamously close relationship with the singer, while Mamet (Girls) was forced to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.
Rendón, who is only really known for her role in the TV show Imposters will take Mamet's place. According to IndieWire, Patti Smith is also reportedly not going to be involved in the project and declined to comment as to why.
In 2010, Smith wrote a highly acclaimed memoir entitled Just Kids that chronicled her and Mapplethorpe's enduring relationship. The two went onto become central figures of the New York punk scene. Mapplethorpe would continue to make boundary-pushing, often homoerotic work until his death from AIDS in 1989.
Mapplethorpe is set to begin shooting July 11 in New York.
