More European content in Video on Demand (VoD) services
The European Parliament Culture Committee wants 30% European content on Netflix and other VoD services in every EU member state.
The committee has called to increase the quota for European works in on-demand platforms libraries. Instead of the 20%, proposed last May, they now plea for a 30% quota.
EU members would also be able to ask a financial contribution to the development of European audiovisual productions. The contributions are proportional to the profit generated in the demanding country.
The EU hopes to level out the playing field so traditional TV channels can compete with international content providers.
The decision whether to pass the legislation won’t be made before May 15, the Parliament will then decide if they open talks for the final approval. The committee hopes to adopt the negotiated mandate May 23 2017
