Mary Robinson and U2 to receive European Order of Merit
Following the announcement, the honourees will be invited to an official conferral ceremony that will take place during the 18-21 May plenary session in Strasbourg.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has today (March 10) revealed the names of the first recipients of the newly established European Order of Merit, a recognition of significant contributions to European integration and the promotion and defence of European values.
Among those receiving the recognition are former Irish President and human rights activist Mary Robinson and members of the band U2.
Mary Robinson has been honoured as a distinguished member of the European Order of Merit, while U2 have been recognised as honourable members.
Last year, during the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, the European Parliament’s Bureau created this new award. This award is the first of its kind given by an EU institution and its aim is to recognise civilians who have significantly contributed to European integration or who promote and defend European values, with up to 20 people being selected each year.
Other recipients selected this year include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and former German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
“Europe has always been built by people, bridging divides, breaking barriers, overthrowing dictatorships and overcoming crises for a better future for our continent," said President Metsola.
"With the European Order of Merit, we honour those who did not simply believe in Europe but who helped build it."
Following the announcement, the honourees will be invited to an official conferral ceremony that will take place during the 18-21 May plenary session in Strasbourg.
