James Bulger's Mother Releases Statement On Detainment's Oscar Nomination
Denise Fergus, mother of James Bulger, is upset about Detainment's Oscar nomination.
Denise Fergus, mother of James Bulger, has released a statement following the Irish short Detainment’s nomination for Best Live Action Short Film at the Academy Awards.
Vincent Lambe’s Detainment follows the arrest of children Robert Thompson and Jon Venables for the kidnapping and murder of toddler Bulger in 1993. The film has stirred controversy and a petition against its nomination has been signed over 90,000 times. Denise Fergus voiced her anger in a post on Twitter.
“I cannot express how angered and disgusted I am at this so-called film that has been made and now nominated for an Oscar,” wrote Fergus. “It’s one thing making a film like this without contacting or getting permission from James family but another to have a child re-enact the final hours of James’s life before he was brutally murdered and making myself and my family have to relive this all over again.”
