Jessie Buckley nominated for Oscar for Best Actress In A Leading Role
The Academy Awards ceremony takes place in Los Angeles on March 15.
Following her lauded performance in Hamnet, Jessie Buckley has been nominated for Best Actress In A Leading Role at this year's Academy Awards.
Coleraine-born author Maggie O'Farrell, who wrote the original novel, has also scored an Oscar nomination for Adapted Screenplay for Hamnet, alongside Chloé Zhao.
In addition, Chloé Zhao has been nominated in the Directing category – while Hamnet, as well as Bugonia (co-produced by Dublin-based company Element Pictures), are in the running for Best Picture.
The Irish short film Retirement Plan – directed by filmmaker John Kelly and voiced by Domhnall Gleeson – has earned a spot in the Animated Short Film category.
Richard Baneham, a two-time Oscar winner from Dublin, has been nominated once again for Visual Effects for Avatar: Fire and Ash.
The nominations were announced live this afternoon by actors Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman.
For her performance in Hamnet, Jessie Buckley has already won a Golden Globe and a Critics' Choice Award – in addition to Actor Award and IFTA nominations.
This is the Kerry actor's second Academy Award nomination, having previously been in the running for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the 2021 film The Lost Daughter.
This year, Buckley is up against the likes of Emma Stone (Bugonia), Kate Hudson (Song Sung Blue), Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I'd Kick You) and Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value).
Winners will be revealed at the 98th Academy Awards ceremony, taking place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, on March 15. Comedian Conan O'Brien is set to host the show for the second year running.
