ITV are beefing up their screen selection with the small screen adaptation of Lethal Weapon.
It's been 3 years since ITV imported a US programme with The Americans but they've instilled their faith in the Lethal Weapon series to screen over this side of the waters.
Originally created for Fox TV, ITV are taking a chance on Lethal Weapon. Their last US acquisition of The Americans didn't go down very well with viewers as noted by the second series being moved to the lesser-watched ITV3. However, ITV bossman Kevin Lygo has every faith that Lethal Weapon will hit the ground running; We’re absolutely delighted to be bringing Lethal Weapon to our main channel. It’s rare that we find an acquisition with that sweet spot potential - the best production values and hugely entertaining drama we think can appeal to the biggest and broadest audiences and take up a place in ITV primetime.”
Lethal Weapon hopes to emulate the success garnered by fellow film-to-TV transitions like Fargo. Clayne Crawford steps into the shoes of Mel Gibson's wreckless cop, Martin Riggs. He's joined on-screen by Damon Waynes as the cautious Roger Murtaugh. With Lethal Weapon awaiting it's US debut date of September 21, it has yet to acquire a premiere date on ITV.
