Pokémon movie will star Detective Pikachu
Based on the Japanese video game that came out earlier this year
A live-action Pokémon movie is confirmed for development, featuring a new take on an old face: Detective Pikachu.
Legendary Entertainment and the Pokémon Company announced their plans to build a live-action franchise around the character, who made his debut appearance in the Japanese video game Great Detective Pikachu earlier this year.
The deal came after numerous studios - inspired by the recent Pokémon Go craze - lobbied for the film rights.
There are few details as of yet about the coming film. Max Landis, whose credits include the Jesse Eisenberg-starring American Ultra, is rumoured as a possible screenwriter.
Though Danny DeVito would likely be welcomed by fans in the part of Pikachu, his involvement is unlikely. Fans recently made a petition requesting that the actor voice Pikachu in the English dub of Great Detective Pikachu. Despite the petition amassing 40,000 signatures, DeVito declined to audition.
