Galway Film Fleadh announces short film programme
Superb offering set for this July's festival
Galway Film Fleadh have unveiled the short film programme set for this year's event.
Short Film at the Fleadh received upwards of 500 submissions this year, and the cream of the crop has been identified for 14 screenings during the annual extravaganza.
Among them are an incredible range of offerings, which will be competing for something even bigger than audience approval; the winners of the Tiernan McBride Award for Best Short Drama and the James Horgan Award for Best Short Animation will gain eligibility for Oscar® consideration.
No surprise, then, that the list of luminaries going west is impressive; Moe Dunford, Peter Coonan and Steve Wall star in Ian Hunt Duffy's directing debut Gridlock; Killing Bono star Martin McCann makes his directing debut – alongside cinematographer Kevin Tracey – with ‘STARZ’; even Vine sensations Fuppin Eejits are getting involved.
There's also a healthy selection of foreign language efforts, as well as an impressive array of film as Gaeilge – Oonagh Kearney's Oíche Nollaig na mBan (pictured) among them.
It's not just the action on-screen either, as discussion forums – as well as the chance to press the flesh with some movers and shakers within the industry – offer a chance to get even more from the experience.
Speaking about this year’s Short Film Programme, Coordinator Eibh Collins said, “I’m excited that this year we are supporting short filmmakers not only with screenings but now through our new panels & networking sessions.”
There's also a thrilling mixture of live action, animation and documentary, with the Irish Animation Premieres programme not only exhibiting work from independent filmmakers but new filmmakers from IADT National Film School and Ballyfermot College of Further Education.
There's also a Way Out West category, supporting filmmakers in the West of Ireland, and a hand of friendship extended east; a collaboration with Creative England will showcase some incredible productions funded by schemes including iShorts 2 and Funny Girls.
The short film programmes and events run across the festival from Wednesday July 6 to Sunday July 10; for all the need-to-knows check out [link]galwayfilmfleadh.com[/link].
