Flying Lotus to premiere directorial debut
Screening at Sundance's Los Angeles festival NEXT FEST
Flying Lotus, the psychedelic hip-hop producer behind 2014's You're Dead!, will premiere his debut film at Sundance NEXT FEST on August 14.
Royal marks Flying Lotus's first effort as a film director, though he has previously scored four film projects. For Royal, he is credited under the alias "steve".
He describes the film as "an awkward love story that's definitely not for the kiddies". The story takes place after "Los Angeles's worst quake nightmare".
The film marks what Flying Lotus has said he hopes to be his "most prolific year". He has promised a new album this year, following on his recent momentum.
His previous You're Dead! was a large critical success, and he has gained exposure thanks to Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly.
Though he produced just one track on that album - the dizzying opener 'Wesley's Theory' - many critics have noted his influence on the album's production.
Watch the video for his Kendrick-collab track 'Never Catch Me' below.
