Dublin Smartphone Film Festival on Lookout for Filmmakers
The Dublin Smartphone Film Festival - celebrating filmmakers who shoot exclusively on mobile devices - has its debut on January 27.
The Dublin Smartphone festival are on the lookout for creative ideas with an inventive use of mobile device technology. To attract strong concepts and participants, they have teamed up with smartphone equipment manufacturers including Shoulderpod, Helium, Iographer, ProShot, Gripgear and Zhiyun to award prizes for each category.
The awards categories are: Best Fiction, Music Video, Documentary and Animation. Also receiving its own award category is 'Best 360/VR Film'. Entries for this will be restricted to no longer than 15 minutes in length.
Along with educational workshops, the Dublin Smartphone Film Festival will screen a selection of short films, documentaries, animations and music videos. The event boasts 65 entries from more than 25 countries.
The Dublin Smartphone Film Festival was founded by Robert Fitzhugh, a filmmaker who has previously worked for the Reel World Film Festival in Canada and more recently as part of the PR and marketing team for the Fingal Film Festival.
Fitzhugh outlined the event's goals and spoke about his love of mobile phones in filmmaking:
“As a filmmaker myself, I noticed how accessible mobile phones were. The phone provides an open playing field for filmmakers at all levels. No longer is expensive technology a barrier to creativity.
''The mobile phone has expanded the scope and freedom for what filmmakers can do. Mobile devices offer all the tools a filmmaker needs right there in the palm of your hand.
''The festival's mission is to encourage the next generation of filmmakers to share their stories and to provide them with a platform to present these stories to a wider audience.”
The Dublin Smartphone Film Festival will take place in the Generator Hostel in Smithfield on January 27 from 2pm - 7pm.
