Drone cause flights to halt at Dublin Airport
Transport Minister Eamon Ryan is under further pressure to tackle drone use near Dublin Airport
Due to a drone disruption, all flight operations at Dublin Airport had to be shut down last night (February 21st). It marks the fifth time in four weeks that the DAA were forced to halt flight operations.
There were no flight diversions since the stoppage lasted half an hour between 8:22pm and 8:52pm. Airport bosses are calling for severe punishments for anyone found guilty of flying a drone near an airport. To further prevent accidents, they also call for counter-drone technology that can be used at airports.
According to a report from Ryanair, last night's incident led to multiple delays and disrupted hundreds of passengers.
Yesterday, a father of two caused a security alert by flying a drone into a "critical area" of Dublin Airport. The 41-year-old from Swords' Ridgewood Close was granted bail. Additionally, he was ordered to stay at least 2km away from Dublin Airport. In March, he will be back in court.
On the day in which a second person in two weeks has been charged with flying a drone near Dublin Airport, we would remind drone users that it is illegal to fly a drone within 5km of the airport. Severe punishments must follow for anyone found guilty.
