App Attack and Tech News
App Attack
Who’s the daddy? If it’s you, a new app is designed to help you through the sleepless nights and nuclear nappies. DADDYO, from Dublin-based digital consultancy iQ Content, is billed as a survival kit for new dads. Tom Cunningham created the app’s illustrated guides for fathers, which teaches new dads how to change nappies, bathe babies, and keep their partners sane. Daddyo is on the Apple App Store for €1.79.
Kids of all ages can brush up on their Irish with TG4 app, CULACAINT 3. The app is designed for Irish language learners, with images, written and spoken versions, of each word. Cúlacaint won Best App for Learners at the Celtic Media Festival 2013. Cúlacaint 2 was nominated for an Appy Award 2013.
METADATA+ deals with a far grimmer topic, but is no less educational. The app uses satellite imagery to display the time, date, location of U.S. drone strikes across the Middle East. Data artist and web developer Josh Begley created the app to bring home the effect of drones in distant countries. Find out more at joshbegley.com

You've been framed
The gap between amateur and professional cameras has been shrinking every year, and now the latest Panasonic Lumix camera has star billing. The LUMIX DMC-GH4 has 4K recording, allowing you to shoot professional videography. The camera comes with a 16.05-megapixel Live MOS sensor, Venus Engine processor, and a super speedy Auto Focus system. The burst shooting is faster than a redneck on the run from the law. We’re looking at 12 frames per second, and a shutter speed up to a maximum of 1/8000 second. DMC-GH4 is constructed from magnesium alloy: dustproof, splash proof, and possibly idiot proof too.
 Last but not least
Post-apocalyptic thriller The Last Of Us topped plenty of polls – including one in the Hot Press Annual – for best game of 2013. The moving relationship between
its two protagonists, intricately written story, and heart-stopping action, created Breaking Bad levels of fanfare. Now savvy teenager Ellie is back in a Left Behind, new downloadable adventure for PS3. This prequel explores Ellie’s relationship with her best friend, and their struggles to survive in a world gone to shit. Developers Naughty Dog have confirmed plans for The Last Of Us 2, so expect more post-apocalyptic misery coming to a PS4 near you.
Songs for the deaf
A new portable wireless speaker, from Logitech, lets you take big beats on the move. The X100 boom box hooks up to phones and tablets via-Bluetooth, and rattles away in the background for ages, on account of its five hour battery life. There’s a built-in microphone for hands-free phone calls. The X100 is more flamboyant than Elton John’s wardrobe – it comes in grey, yellow, orange, red and green – and recharges in a jiffy via-a micro USB cable.
