Anne Hathaway Appointed as the UN Goodwill Ambassador for Women
She follows in the footsteps of fellow A-listers Nicole Kidman and Emma Watson.
The Oscar-winning actress now has another attribute to her name with this appointment.
Like her predecessors, Hathaway is a major name in the Hollywood industry and her influence shall develop the argument and continue the push to attain gender equality. Now the figurehead for the promotion of gender equality and empowerment of women, Hathaway is really highlighting the issues surrounding 'motherhood penalty'. The stigma attached to women in the workplace as employers fear they will be unable or unwilling to perform to the expected standard due to a series of hypothetical 'what if's of marriage and child bearing.
The UN Women’s executive director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka is delighted to have Hathaway on board to spread the worthy message: 'The appointment of Anne is timely because this year UN Women is driving hard to foster more positive mindsets and practical arrangements around workplaces that build and support equality for women.'
Hathaway has been highly involved in advocating women's rights in the past as she voiced the documentary for Girl Rising which discussed the importance of female education. Hathaway will be inaugurated into the UN where she's expected to deliver a speech. It'll be a tough one following up to Emma Watson's incredibly impassioned HeForShe speech of 2014.
