The 24 Hour Plays will return to the Abbey Theatre this Sunday, February 3, in aid of Dublin Youth Theatre.
The 24 Hour Plays originated in the mid-90s in New York and is now an annual gala benefit on Broadway, as well as at the Old Vic in London, with performances in Chicago, Athens and around the world.
Now in its 8th annual presentation at Abbey Theatre in Ireland's capital, The 24 Hour Plays: Dublin will encompass six short plays that will be written, rehearsed and presented all within 24 hours by the best of Irish writing and directing talent. The shows will be performed by more than two dozen of Ireland’s most recognized and beloved stars of stage and screen.
A team of over 30 theatre technicians, including producers from The 24 Hour Company in New York, will facilitate the work.
This year’s rendition serves as a special gala fundraising event for Dublin Youth Theatre. Ticket costs range from €45-€120, with all proceeds going directly to DYT. For the fourth year in a row, The 24 Hour Plays: Dublin is proudly supported by BNP Paribas Real Estate as its primary sponsor.
The first Irish incarnation of The 24 Hour Plays received its sold-out Irish premiere presentation in February 2012 at Project Arts Centre and went on to win a Special Recognition Award for Best Event at the Irish Fundraising Awards that year. In January 2013, the show moved to the Abbey Theatre where it has played sold-out houses every year since. Now in its 8th year, The 24 Hour Plays has raised over €93,000 for Dublin Youth Theatre through ticket sales and donations.
In a statement regarding this year’s show, The 24 Hour Plays producer Eva Scanlan said, “I’m thrilled that The 24 Hour Plays: Dublin returns for its eighth annual presentation in aid of Dublin Youth Theatre. Since 2012, we have presented audiences with the best writers, directors and actors that Ireland has to offer, and this year carries on that tradition with a really exciting lineup, balancing emerging and experienced talent to create six short plays for a very special, one-night-only performance.”
The creative team for The 24 Hour Plays: Dublin includes playwrights Enda Walsh (Once, Ballyturk, The Walworth Farce), Eva O’Connor (Maz and Bricks, BBC Three’s Overshadowed), and David Horan (Class), directors Julie Kelleher (The Everyman), Mollie Molumby (Half Light, Susie and the Story Shredder) and Karl Shiels (Theatre Upstairs), Rebecca Grimes (Fair City), Morgan C Jones (Nowhere Fast, Quantico, Game of Thrones), Aoibheann McCaul (Fair City), Aaron Monaghan (Richard III, DruidShakespeare, DruidMurphy), Sarah Morris (The Lost O’Casey, Class), Donal O’Kelly (Bat The Father Rabbit The Son), Felicia Olusanya (Riot, Requiem for Truth), Amilia Stewart (Fair City), and Billie Traynor (Moone Boy, Ros na Run).
