The National's New Music Video Takes Aim At US Politics
The band's new music video for 'Walk It Back' “captures the pomp and rituals of Congress and its vainglorious, televised culture", explains its director Casey Reas.
For some the spoken text at the centre of the song sounds like someone speaking with an Irish twang, but the the dialogue has been attributed to Karl Rove, George W. Bush’s advisor, who has denied the association.
Regardless of who may or may not said it, there's plenty of food for thought in the words spoken in the song: "We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you’re studying that reality – judiciously, as you will – we’ll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors… and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do."
