Kevin Shields lends a hand to Sofia Coppola
Having parted company with Primal Scream, Kevin Shields has remixed two Bow Wow Wow tracks for Sofia Coppola’s latest blockbuster-in-the-making, Marie Antoinette.
While a proper period costume jobby, Coppola has decided to go with a contemporary soundtrack that also includes Siouxsie & The Banshees ‘Hong Kong Garden’, The Cure ‘All Cats Are Grey’, Aphex Twin ‘Avril 14’, New Order ‘Age Of Consent’ and Gang Of Four ‘Natural’s Not In It’.
Shields gets to work his magic on Bow Wow Wow’s big early ‘80s hit, ‘I Want Candy’, and their cover of Johnny Mercer’s ‘Fools Rush In’. For the benefit of Hot Press’ less long in the tooth readers, BWW were the band put together by Malcolm McLaren following the implosion of the Sex Pistols.
“They actually based Marie Antoinette, from a styling point of view, on Bow Wow Wow singer Anabella Lwin,” says the band’s current manager, Nicole Powers. “They drew parallels from the fact that they were both young girls who found fame and fortune at a ridiculously early age. It’s totally a punk rock period drama – all the graphic design is based around the Jamie Reid style that was on the Sex Pistols cover.”
Adds Bow Wow Wow bassist Leigh Gorman: “The ‘I Want Candy’ mix is absolutely phenomenal and a bit more rock ‘n’ roll than the original. He loops the bass and it goes really well.”
Due to hit the screens here in the autumn, the film co-stars Kirsten Dunst as Marie Antoinette and Jason Schwartzman as Louis XVI.
