Puerto Rican anthem played for first time at the Olympic games
As tennis player Monica Puig accepted her first gold medal for Puerto Rico, the anthem 'Borinquena' played for the first time at the games.
The song was written in 1867 to the rhythm of the contradanza or habanera dance style, it was later used as a military march. The anthem's original lyrics are from a poem by renowned poet Lola Rodriguez de Tio. The hymn’s original lyrics, now known as “the revolutionary version,” are from a poem by Lola Rodriguez de Tió. It's orininal verses served as a passionate commentary describing the revolt against Spanish rule in Puerto Rico.
