Trailer for Anthony Bourdain biopic released
The Holdovers breakout Dominic Sessa is set to play Anthony Bourdain in Tony, a biopic on the chef's life which is set to release in August 2026
A24 Studios have released the trailer for Tony, a biopic on the life of Anthony Bourdain.
Bourdain, who died in 2018, was an American chef, author, and television personality who helped popularize “foodie” culture in the early 21st century through his books and television programmes.
The Holdovers breakout Dominic Sessa stars as the chef in a little-known period of his life, when he was 19 and working in Massachusetts.
After failing to get a writing fellowship, Bourdain gets a job as a dishwasher, getting his first experience working in a kitchen.
Though sceptical at first, Bourdain forms a bond with his coworkers and becomes increasingly comfortable in the kitchen that would come to "shape the course of his life".
In one heated exchange with a cook, Bourdain claims, "You know I can cook too, actually." In response, the cook says "Oh, the kid says he's a cook chef", before Bourdain quips "I'm not actually a fucking cook, I'm actually a writer. I said I know how to cook".
Bourdain's estate said the film is intended as an interpretation of a pivotal moment in his early life rather than a comprehensive biopic.
The movie is directed by Matt Johnson, the man behind the critically acclaimed Blackberry (2023).
"Those two chapters of Kitchen Confidential read like ‘Genesis’ to me," Johnson said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “So little happens, but the margins are packed. It meant the cast, and I could investigate this man’s origin together, knowing only where he would end up 20 years later.”
A24 Studios is yet to reveal an, official release date but the expected arrival of Tony is August 2026.
