The internet may have ravaged the corporate music business but it’s giving something back in the shape of some fab new online documentaries
Caught In The Net hasn’t left the house this fortnight with some quality music documentaries keeping us glued to the Apple Mac (my, haven’t times changed).
First up at youtube.com/watch?v=-SGk76IqlSE&feature=youtu.be is Re-Vinylized, a fabulously nerdy trip round Chicago’s independent record stores, which won big recently at the Windy City’s Reel Shorts Film Festival. Contributors include Jim DeRogatis, the music critic who testified at R. Kelly’s child porn trial after he was anonymously sent a tape of the rapper allegedly canoodling with an underage girl.
Also worthy of your immediate youtu.be/yY2q3mF5Tk0 attention is Color Me Obsessed, a two-hour doc about cult Americans The Replacements told through the eyes and ears of their rabid fans who make Bieber Believers seem positively lackadaisical about their hero.
Meanwhile, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, John Doe, Jakob Dylan, The Jayhawks and Frank Black are among the musical friends who’ve released split 7” vinyl singles to help Replacements guitarist Slim Dunlap recover from the stroke that left him paralysed last year.
“He was hospitalised for nine months and his recovery has been slow – hindered by pain, paralysis of the left side and the inability to swallow,” reads the songsforslim.com mission statement. “He’s currently at home being cared for by his family and a team of aides, nurses and therapists. His sharp intellect, wit and photographic memory are all, thankfully, intact. Insurance does not pay for long term care and the general prognosis for Slim is that he will likely need around-the-clock care for the rest of his life. He needs our help.”
Which just leaves time for quick visits to youtube.com/user/cassetteboy (the Christine Bleakley mash-up is particularly chucklesome); soundcloud.com/smearballs/jimmy-savile-remix (pisstake disco tribute to the deeply unlovely Sir Jimmy); hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/tv-pilots-2013-complete-guide-413377 (what’s new on American telly) and guardian.co.uk/sport/video/2013/jan/11/peru-goalkeeper-double-save-video (Peruvian goalie pulls off one of the greatest saves of all-time).
