U2 attend Street Child World Cup in Mexico City
The band were in Mexico City during the Street Child World Cup while filming a new music video.
U2 made an appearance at the Street Child World Cup tournament in Mexico City.
“We’re here in Mexico City and as usual loving every minute of it. As supporters of Street Child United, we wanted to come along today to support this great cause, see some football and soak up the atmosphere.", the Edge said. "There’s no better town to host such a brilliant event.”
The tournament took place from May 6 to May 14 in Mexico City and brought together 30 teams from around the world. Brazil ultimately won the competition, beating India 4–2 in the final. The event is held ahead of the FIFA World Cup and is organised by Street Child United, which works to support and advocate for street-connected children globally.
This week, U2 drew attention after filming the music video for 'Street of Dreams' in the streets of Mexico City, surrounded by a large crowd. “The thunder and rain crashed the generator for the film shoot”, stated the band online. “Which meant a bewildered but welcoming neighbour let the U2ers crash their apartment at dinner time and out to their balcony”.
The track is expected to feature on a potential future studio album.
Drummer Larry Mullen Jr. also joined the group. He had previously missed the band’s 2023–2024 Las Vegas Sphere residency due to neck and back injuries, with Bram van den Berg filling, marking the first time Mullen had missed a U2 show since 1978.
In April, the band surprise released their EP Easter Lily on April 3, coinciding with Good Friday. It was the second in a pair of six-track EPs concluding the Lent season, following Days of Ash, released on February 18.
