Taoiseach to visit the US on St. Patrick's Day, despite calls to boycott
Micheál Martin alongside eight other Ministers will bring the St. Patrick's Day programme to the US this year.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin will travel to Washington DC for the upcoming St Patrick's Day celebrations. The visit has drawn criticism, with some opposition parties urging him not to attend. Martin is expected to visit US President Donald Trump in the White House during the visit, and he will also travel to Philadelphia.
"Fianna Fáil are once again pushing the laughable idea that we should go and grovel before the Americans every St Patrick’s Day to 'maintain our influence in Washington’s corridors of power,'" said People Before Profit on social media.
"When they go to Washington, they go as a useful appendage to the American empire - and nothing more. Micheál Martin won’t be representing the Irish people, the last time he went he laughed at us all for suffering under the housing crisis; he’ll be there representing a tax haven that keeps US billionaires happy, and a military supply chain that serves American interests," they added.
Sinn Féin TD Eoin Ó Broin said his party will discuss whether they will travel to Washington DC for St Patrick's week at their next Ard Chomhairle meeting. In 2025, they boycotted St. Patrick's Day at the White House in protest against the US's involvement in Gaza.
The Taoiseach's US visit comes in the midst of current tensions between Trump and the EU over his proposed takeover of Greenland. This St. Patrick's Day programme is set to focus on trade and investment.
