A housing demonstration will take place outside Leinster House tonight at 6pm.

The protest comes as new data from the property website Daft.ie and the Central Statistics Office shows that house prices and rents continue to rise across the country, with the national monthly average rent between January and March surpassing €2,000 for the first time.

"This is madness," read a social media post on the party's channels, the "Government need to stop ignoring renters."

The protest will feature Social Democrats' TD Rory Hearne as well as speeches from renters, CATU and SIPTU members. There will also be live music.

Hearne said in an Instagram post that the protest would be calling on the "Government to keep the rent caps and rent pressure zones and build affordable homes.

"They cannot be allowed [to] lift rent caps in the midst of a housing emergency."
