Whelan's to open own record shop as part of birthday festivities
Whelan's has announced details of its 25th anniversary celebrations, which will include special gigs, a photo competition to find the best pic that's been taken in the Dublin 2 venue and, rather excitingly, the launch of their own record shop.
"Each month some of the biggest and best bands to play Whelan's over the years will return to play special intimate one-off shows," they reveal. "For each of these special rock art will be commissioned. A video will also be made."
We suspect The Frames may be one of those acts!
A new whelans25.com site was launched today, and recalls that the first gig in 1989 was "organised by Kevin Street SU Ents Officer at the time Lisa Tinley and the band featured was the Subterraneans."
As for what else was going down a quarter of a musical century ago, the site continues: "President Reagan makes way for George Bush. Ted Bundy was executed. Soviets leave Afghanistan. Sky TV is launched. Ayatollah Khomeni places a bounty on the head of Salman Rushdie. Protests at Tiananmen Square. Haughey forms coalition with Progressive Democrats. Nintendo Gameboy is released, as are the Guildford 4 after 14 years. The Berlin Wall is finally torn down. Rory McIlroy is born. Samuel Beckett dies."
Jeez, we're feeling old!
