Watch: Fascinating mini-doc 'The Truth about Irish Hip Hop’
“If you don’t love where you’re from, where you’re from won’t love you. And that’s the essence of hip hop” says Dublin rapper Mango. In essence, that’s what the documentary ‘The Truth about Irish Hip Hop’ attempts to address.
Directed by Gavin Fitzgerald and Mark Hayes, the documentary tracks the relatively brief history of Irish hip hop, meeting some of its rising stars along the way. Offering their own experiences and opinions are 2017 RTÉ Choice Music Prize winners The Rusangano Family, as well as This Side Up, Fifth Element, Doublescreen, Jafaris, Kojaque, and Mango, among others.
The doc follows a path from ‘90s musical group ScaryÉire, to modern faces such as Rubberbandits, with Blindboy himself making a quick appearance, in which he compares ‘Come Out Ye Black n’ Tans’ to NWA’s ‘F*ck the Police’.
