William Orbit, producer for U2 and Madonna, dies aged 69

British music producer William Orbit, who worked with U2, Madonna, Blur, All Saints and more, has died aged 69.

His friends and family posted a statement to his social media, explaining that the artist had passed away at his home on July 23.

“He will be greatly missed by us and by so many whose lives he touched through his music, friendship and kindness." No cause of death was given.

Orbit was most known for his collaboration with Madonna on her 1998 album Ray of Light, resulting in hits such as 'The Power of Goodbye', 'Frozen' and the title track. Madonna won three Grammy awards in 1999 for the album, which had multi-platinum sales around the world.

“William is a complete madman genius,” Madonna said of the Ray of Light sessions.

“I’d come to him with an idea of where I wanted to go musically, hum melodies or read lyrics, and then leave him alone in the laboratory."

He produced two songs for U2, 'Electrical Storm' and 'The Hands That Built America', which appeared on their compilation The Best of 1990-2000.

Orbit worked with Blur on their 1999 album 13, which saw the hit singles 'Tender' and 'Coffee and TV'.

In the years that followed he collaborated with many artists in the pop world such as Britney Spears, Melanie C, Robbie Williams, Chris Brown, Pink, No Doubt and Nadine Coyle.
