'Falling Slowly' soars up the charts following Glen Hansard's funeral

'Falling Slowly' by Glen Hansard has soared through the Official Irish Singles Chart, following his funeral earlier this week on August 4.

The track claimed the seventh spot, rising from previous week's No. 32, after the news of his death on July 29.

Hansard wrote the song alongside his Swell Season bandmate and Once co-star Markéta Irglová. Their song from the romance musical won Best Original Song at the 80th Academy Awards.

More than 40,000 fans joined the YouTube livestream to watch his funeral, which took place at St.Patrick's Cathedral and featured music from his friends and family.

Albums from The Frames and Hansard have risen through the Top 20 Independent Album Chart, with Longitude by The Frames at No. 4, Hansard's Rhythm and Repose at No. 6, Breadcrumb Trail at number 8, Don't Settle - VOL 2 - Transmissions West at No. 10 and Didn't He Ramble at No. 20.

Still clutching the No. 1 spot in the Singles chart is 'Rein Me In' by Sam Fender & Olivia Dean, spending 59 weeks in the charts. The song became the UK's longest running No.1 single last week, breaking a 73-year record previously held by Frankie Laine's hit 'I Believe'.

No. 2 in the charts was secured by Kingfishr, with their latest single ‘The Sun Will Never Settle’, released in May. 'Killeagh' falls from the Top 20 since last week, taking spot 23 after spending 81 weeks in the charts.

Ella Langley stays in the Top 10, with 'Choosin' Texas' at No. 3, totaling 31 weeks in the charts.

Ariana Grande's latest album Petal made its way into the Top 20, with the title track grabbing the ninth spot, 'Hate That I Made You Love Me’ at No. 8 and 'Kiss Me' at No. 19.

'Lonely Island' by Amble hit No. 14 after spending 97 weeks in the charts, with 'Tonnta' following at No. 18.

The 'Green and Red of Mayo' by the Saw Doctors dropped in the charts after enjoying the sixth spot last week. Returning to the charts after its 1992 release, it serves as the unofficial anthem for Mayo GAA fans and reached No. 1 on Spotify’s most-played tracks in Ireland, following their historic win at Croke Park.
