WATCH: Exclusive second trailer for The Danish Girl
The movie will be based on the story of the first transgender surgery
A new film is being released about the first male who was ever to undergo a surgical sex change to a female back in the 1920s. From the same actor who starred as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, Eddie Redmayne will be playing the part of Einar Wegener in the new film.
Based off of a true story, it all began when Einar's wife, Gerda Wegener, began painting him as a female model named Lili. Einar began to develop a connection with the fictitious model Lili, and eventually began to take on personality traits of her. He soon realised that for his entire life he was trapped inside the wrong body. He did not feel as though he identified with male characteristics, and alternatively felt more himself when he was embodying a more effeminate persona. He eventually decided to undergo a life-changing surgery to a female, which could have potentially been fatal.
The film appears to be a tear-jerker, and effectively illustrates the struggles of the transition between a man and woman.
The Danish Girl will be directed by Tom Hooper and Lasse Hallström, and in addition to Redmayne, will star Alicia Vikander, Amber Heard, Matthias Shoenaerts, Ben Wishaw and Rachel Weisz.
The film will hit Irish cinemas January 2016.
