Walking The Walk
John Walshe gets the lowdown on Walker, a new band formed from the ashes of Rollerskate Skinny, who have just launched their debut LP on the Internet.
Walker is a new musical project formed from the ashes of Rollerskate Skinny. The song-writing talents of former Skinnies Stephen M and Gerard Griffin have combined to produce an album, Somewhere Between, which is only available via the internet, at http://www.walkermusic.co.uk
When Rollerskate Skinny decided to call it a day in 1996, Stephen and Gerard took about a year out but soon found themselves drawn back to the world of music. Walker have been in studio since 1998 and the new millennium saw the launch of Somewhere Between, a CD of demos and rare out-takes from the Walker sessions to date. Visitors to the website can access snippets of all 10 songs from the album, and can download one song, Walk On Water , in its entirety. Incidentally, there should be a video for Walk On Water coming to a screen near you very soon.
So why decide to release it over the Web? We haven t approached too many people about releasing it though a record company, and we just thought the Web was a good place to start, explains Stephen. Plus there were a few Rollerskate Skinny sites around the States and in Europe, so we have linked up with them. Were not totally anti-record company or anything but instead of waiting around we just decided to put something out. Especially after Rollerskate Skinny, when it took us years to get something out.
I ve got to a stage where I just want to put music out when and how I want to. Using the web is like having your own independent record company, and it s amazing how quickly you can do things. You can mix a song and have it up on the site that day. I m not totally absorbed by the Internet craze but I ll never turn my back on technology.
