Trent Reznor Lashes Out At YouTube
Reznor is Chief Executive Officer for streaming competitor Apple Music.
Frontman for Nine Inch Nails Trent Reznor has lashed out at YouTube. Reznor believes YouTube's business practices to be "very disingenuous". He added that YouTube is built "on the backs of free, stolen content and that’s how they got that big".
Reznor was making the comments in a recent interview with Billboard at the Apple Worldwide Developer's Conference in San Francisco. There Apple revealed a facelift and update for the Apple Music streaming service. He went on to say, "the last 10 years or so have felt depressing because avenues are shutting down. Little shrines to music lovers -- record shops -- are disappearing... And every time there’s a new innovation, the musician is the one that didn’t have a voice".
The rock artist said Apple Music is about providing an alternative to free listening sites like YouTube. "We’re trying to build a platform that provides an alternative — where you can get paid and an artist can control where their [content] goes".
YouTube did launch its own paid subscription service last year called 'YouTube Red'. However a large amount of music is still upload to the site both legally, via Vevo channels for example, and illegally. As of March 2016 Spotify had 20 million paid premium account. Apple Music has 15 million paid subscribers.
