Till Death Do Us Part
Cypress Hill have somehow managed to keep themselves commercially viable and relevant at the same time
With hip-hop increasingly becoming a young person’s game, where does it leave the (relatively) old stagers? NWA imploded, Public Enemy are out on a self-imposed limb and Run DMC find themselves tragically forced out of action. Yet Cypress Hill have somehow managed to keep themselves commercially viable and relevant at the same time. Credit has to lay at the door of DJ Muggs, surely the most extraordinary producer working in hip-hop today. Till Death Do Us Part is his album more than anybody’s, a sonic tour de force that takes in samples, beats, live instruments and even snatches of classical compositions.
The range of styles that he brings to the band is wide-ranging too, from reggae and Latin to the Clash sampling single ‘What’s Your Number?’ featuring Tim Armstrong of Rancid.
Even after all these years, Till Death Do Us Part is a towering achievement.
