Thirteen Steps
Dublin funk rockers avoid the obvious on sparkling debut.
El Hombre Jokes are anything but predictable. The Dublin Jokeens step ahead of their rivals by avoiding the clichéd approach, blending rock, blues, country, funk and reggae, and playing outside the box as the mood takes them. There’s a boogie funkiness to ‘Where We Once Started’ that evokes Little Feat, and ‘Eggshells’ is ace banjo-lead bluegrass rock.
The two-tone ‘Wake Up’ sashays in with a smiley chorus to shine new light on a dusty world, ‘Love Street’ gets a jaunty reggae treatment, while ‘Something’s Got To Give’ goes even more Caribbean. The strident ‘Get Up/Get Out’ and the foot-stomping riff-fest ‘Suicide Bomber’ are top-hole blues rockers, with grooving guitars and solid drums driving the gritty vocals.
For rock music with added vitamins and lots of fibre, put El Hombre Jokes on your menu pronto, amigo.
