Reddit post may reveal first complete album in Stevens' discography.
Sufjan Stevens' first album is A Sun Came, which he released through the Asthmatic Kitty label. Or so we thought.
Yesterday, a Reddit poster included a picture of a CD-ROM called Stalker. The poster said they "used to work next door to Stevens' studio in Brooklyn" and once saw Stevens throw out "a bunch of stuff in the building's dumpster". The neighbour salvaged the album, which is credited to Stevens, from the rubbish.
The liner notes indicate that the record was copyrighted by Asthmatic Kitty in 1998, which would make the album Stevens' first.
A commenter on the forum found an old Stevens' interview with Adequacy that may point to the album's legitimacy. In the interview, Stevens said, "I've written songs about stalkers".
A representative from the label commented on the Reddit forum, saying the label has "no clue if [the record] is legit", though they do express excitement for the album's finder. The rep asks the poster not to share the release without Stevens' permission, noting that unreleased music often remains unreleased for a reason.
The rep makes sure to stress, though, that they are simply asking politely, since the label doesn't do "'severe takedowns' or legal notices".
See the tracklist for Stalker below, as well some pictures of the potential lost album.
