Kick-start your week with an unconventional ode...
David Norris has had an unofficial Presidential campaign song written for him by Dublin punk metallers Snackbox.
Entitled ‘Rabble Arouser (David Norris: Stick Him In The Áras)’, it’s available for free download here.
“I can assure you that while it's all a bit silly, there's no badness in there,” stresses singer Mickey Dazzler (possibly not his real name). “After outlining David Norris' huge achievement in dragging Ireland through the courts and into the 20th century, the song goes on to describe Senator Norris variously as illustrious, immortal and convivial. Pat Kenny is in there as the mouthpiece of official Ireland, and represents the fear of anything outside the majority ethos, in this case sexual liberation, as I'd have it that the victory in Strasbourg was liberating for everyone who felt trapped by the oppressive conformity of Ireland in the last century, not just the gay community.

"So there you go, that's the idea behind it, and then when you try to express that through the medium of rock 'n' roll you find yourself in a tweed jacket with Judas Priest patches on it spitting a mouthful of feathers at the camera. There are references to O'Casey, Boney M, and seeing some geezer wet himself at the train station in Naples in there too, but that's just gravy.”
Quite. There’s also an accompanying video, which can be perused at [link]www.youtube.com/watch?v=DpYrSKteVcY[/link]. Now, who’s up for doing a clarion call for Martin McGuinness?
