SOAK releases new single, 'Knock Me Off My Feet'
The young Derry native also released details of her highly anticipated second album.
Since making waves with her single ‘Sea Creatures’ back in 2015, SOAK has become a major force on the Irish music scene. Her critically acclaimed debut album, ‘Before We Forgot How to Dream’, released when she was just 19, won the Choice Music Prize in 2016.
Today SOAK has announced details of a follow-up album, ‘Grim Town’, set to be released on Rough Trade Records on April 26.
The singer also premiered a new single, ‘Knock Me Off My Feet.’ The track is the second single off the upcoming album, following ‘Everybody Loves You’, which was released in October. Both tracks reveal a new direction in SOAK’s work, as she moves away from her acoustic singer-songwriter style into a more expansive, eclectic sound.
‘Knock Me Off My Feet’ delves into the ups and downs of small-town culture, as well as coming-of-age struggles. These themes will be further explored on the album, which SOAK describes as “a dystopia that I’ve created in my brain: me on the inside, processed into a pretend location.”
SOAK used this “pretend location” as the central concept of the album: “Once I had the idea of the album being an actual location, exploring the dynamics of this town and what it would look or sound like felt like the right way to give my mental state a personality.”
Although the 22-year-old Derry native has certainly moved into new musical territory on this new album, the unflinchingly honest lyricism that won SOAK her legions of fans hasn’t wavered. ‘Grim Town’ promises to tackle ‘long-distance love, depression, divorce and social anxiety’, as well as ‘the changing modern landscape.’
As well as a North American tour kicking off later this month, SOAK will be playing a number of Irish gigs in May, including stops in Bangor, Cork, Limerick, and Dublin.
‘Knock Me Off My Feet’ is available to stream now.
