Snoop Doog - Bush
Brilliant Effort From Rap Icon
For his latest outing, LA rap icon Snoop Dogg has again enlisted the services of superstar producer Pharrell Williams, a long-term collaborator who has produced many of Snoop’s most memorable hits, including ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot’, ‘Signs’ and ‘Beautiful’. It once again proves a winning combination, with Williams’ dazzling production skills resulting in an album where the overriding style is psychedelic dance-pop, with occasional flourishes of funk, soul and R&B.
Williams is simply a peerless pop producer, and his ability to make tunes that are simultaneously infectiously catchy and musically innovative is evident throughout the none-too-subtly titled Bush (er, unsurprisingly, it’s not a tribute to former US president George Dubya). The likes of ‘This City’, ‘Awake’ and ‘So Many Pros’ are spellbinding exercises in funky pop, all bubbling with delicious musical touches and irresistible hooks. For good measure, ‘Peaches n Cream’ and ‘Edibles’ incorporate house elements to brilliant effect, while there also terrific cameos from regular Williams collaborators Gwen Stefani, Charlie Wilson and Kendrick Lamar.
Even at this advanced stage in his career, Snoop Dogg has still got plenty of bite.
