Despite all his rage, Paul Nolan is still just a rat in a cage, as he breaks down the Smashing Pumpkins’ landmark 1995 double album, Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness. Plus, Paul is joined by Kilian Murphy for a discussion about the Pumpkins’ legacy and the various ups and downs of their extraordinary career.
Hot Press Classics is back with a new instalment, focusing on the Smashing Pumpkins’ landmark 1995 double album, Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness.
In this new edition, Nolan discusses the legendary status of Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness, the start of their stardom with Siamese Dream, and the summit at which the band found themselves in late '95.
He also analyses the Pumpkins' place within the 90s grunge scene, their incredible visual impact and their many iconic music videos, as well as the existential tone of their lyrics.
He then dives into the Smashing Pumpkins explosive breakup, their difficult, almost familial relationships, and the growing resentment between members of the band.
Nolan also discusses the great tragedies that would befall the band throughout their careers, their various attempts at reunions and the limited success of their recent live shows.
Accompanied by Killian Murphy, Nolan also dissects Billy Corgan's controversial image within rock history, his incredible creative output, and the Pumpkins' spectacular flameout.
This episode was produced by Paul Nolan and edited by Flo Laurent.
