Here’s a chance for me to give the world something it really needs; a succinct, superlative-free explanation of who Avicii is, and why popular culture demands that we all possess this knowledge. In 2011, Swedish DJ Tim Bergling, then just 21, released a stomping electro house number called ‘LE7ELS’, which went on to sell over a million copies. For some time, it was the preferred choice of club-hopping teenage girls everywhere, most of whom were received with expressionless faces when they requested it at indie nights around the globe. Thanks to these girls and their itchy feet, Avicii is now about to embark on one of the biggest DJ arena tours ever, including a stop-off in Dublin’s O2, a venue that stars as colossal as Britney Spears have failed to sell-out. To my club-wary ears, new single ‘Silhouettes’ is every bit as ponderously addictive as ‘LE7ELS’, so there’s every chance that this baby-faced Swede will be king of the universe by 2013.
