Rockabilly rebel's debut shows signs of greatness
Part of a new wave of American artists who are indebted to all things ‘50s, former school-teacher turned quiffed-up, rhythm and blues king JD McPherson’s debut Signs & Signifiers is an unashamedly old-school affair (pun intended). Drenched with images of drag races, double denim and doing bold things on Blueberry Hill, the 12-tracker is as salacious as it is soulful: check out the title track and the album opener ‘North Side Gal’ to confirm the arrival of a huge talent. Fans of Chuck Berry, Fats Domino and indeed our own Imelda May will adore this. Let’s do the time warp again – and again...
