Short and Tweet: Son Lux
@hotpress: Greetings, Ryan. How was your 2013?
@sonlux: Holy shit, my 2013 was insane! I had maybe 13 too many things going on though!
@hotpress: What was the main highlight?
@sonlux: The release of my album Lanterns was probably the highlight.
@hotpress: You’re playing the Workman’s Club this month. Was it hard taking the record from studio to stage?
@sonlux: My primary instrument is the studio and I can’t take that on stage so it was inherently problematic, but it did offer me an opportunity to reinvent these songs.
@hotpress: How did Sisyphus, your collaboration with Sufjan Stevens and Serengeti, come about?
@sonlux: The project came together by accident. Sufjan had given Serengeti some beats to use on his record. They needed someone to tie it together so that’s when they hit me up.
@hotpress: What was the process like for making the record?
@sonlux: We all worked from the ground up and brought our own ideas. Lots of potato chips and wine and deodorant!
@hotpress: How’s it sounding?
@sonlux: I would say that it’s actually quite a party record.
@hotpress: You’ve collaborated with so many people over your career. Have you ever been star-struck?
@sonlux: There was one special moment for me when I was able to work with Chris Feeley who is arguably the best mandolinist in the world.
@hotpress: You’ve worked on soundtracks also?
@sonlux: Yes I did some arrangements on Looper and Don Juan. Also, The Disappearance Of Eleanor Rigby is my score which will be out this year.
@hotpress: Your previous job was writing music for commercials?
@sonlux: Yeah. It really wasn’t until Lanterns that I had the luxury not to write ads.
@hotpress: Are you looking forward to visiting Dublin?
@sonlux: Yes, the day that I’m performing in Dublin is actually my birthday. It should be quite the birthday!
