On Our Radar Q&A - Spooklet: "What I love most about the Dublin scene is seeing it get a bit more strange and experimental"

Tell us about your upcoming EP.

It’s an extension of my first EP, In The Belly Of The Mother, where it’s all about rebirth, spending time in the womb and figuring out how to be born into the world. This new EP is the protagonist experiencing the world itself and how that can create a whole new being. It wasn’t necessarily a choice I actively made, it was almost a subconscious continuation. In terms of the sound, I continue to pull from whatever my environment is inspiring me to do.

What goes into the visual aspects of your work?

Spooklet is an alter ego, but I get to channel my own personal experiences through her. I’m living in the UK now, but when I was living in Dublin, I found living in a city and being surrounded by noise, chaos and such a mix of feelings, where I’m at with music and where I’m at in my life – all those things created this story.

I’m born into this world and now I have to work with it and I feel it changing me. So much of the visual identity is the city. I was working with two friends to direct the ‘Why? Why? Why?’ video. We just walked around Dublin and took shots of the buildings, construction sites, birds flying over, the sea.

What’s been the biggest change since leaving Toy Girl and becoming a solo artist?

Working alone, that’s a big learning curve. Especially with Toy Girl – it was a creative direction split between five people. The first EP took me a long time to build the confidence to finish something on my own. As a solo artist, you speak to your friends and bounce off other creatives, but you are the person who makes all the final decisions. Each release I learn a little bit more about how I work best.

Where do you think Dublin’s electronic scene is headed?

What I love most about the Dublin scene is seeing it get a bit more strange and experimental. That’s how I see it developing – more variety within the genre.
