Rory Gallagher fans petition for honour
An online petition has been launched calling for Cork International Airport to be renamed Cork Rory Gallagher Airport in honour of the city’s favourite adopted son.
Over 3,000 people have already agreed with the assertion that, “Rory Gallagher was Ireland’s first true international rock and roll star and was revered not only for his supreme musicianship and talent as an entertainer but also for his integrity as an artist and overwhelming humility as a person. He could bring together people from across religious and political divides in joyous celebration of peace through music and that music is as vibrant and exciting today as it ever was.”
The www.petitiononline.com/RoryCork testimonial ends by declaring: “?Airports bring people together. Rory’s talent and humility still does.”
One of the first to sign on the dotted line was Steven O’Keefe who says, “I, speaking as a citizen of Cork think that it’s only right to name the airport after Rory. He gave so much for Ireland and Cork, so it’s time we gave him a proper monument.”
There’s already a precedent for the move, with Speke being renamed Liverpool John Lennon Airport in 2002.
