Red Bull Bedroom Jam: Ram's Pocket Radio
The Speakeasy, Belfast
Multi-talented ivory tinkler Peter McCauley and his ragged band of misfit musicians make their way back to Belfast tonight for a show that has something of a homecoming vibe. Having recently wowed both critics and fans around Europe with his bruised and battered brand of outsider pop, this evening’s gig finds Rams’ Pocket Radio in world-beating form as a result, and the Speakeasy is packed with fans keen to see a group that look set to be Northern Ireland’s next major success story.
Taking to the stage at midnight, Peter & Co.’s grandiose clatter splices American college rock and good old-fashioned British indie together to give birth to a sound that’s just as comfortable with the volume turned up as it is down. There are plenty of highlights in their short but sweet set. ‘Dogs Run In Packs,’ ‘We Can Be Invisible’ and the exceedingly tunesome ‘Dieter Rams Has Got The Pocket Radios’ provide the wow factor: the last few months on the road have clearly allowed the four-piece to mature into a formidable live act.
The vocal interplay between McCauley and bassist/backing singer Shauna Tohill has also evolved impressively and the Rams of 2012 benefit massively due to the Silhouette front-lady’s continued presence. Tracks like ‘The Sickness, The Taste’ sound destined for greatness and Peter is really growing into his role as the outfit’s frontman as he conducts his band with confidence and charm throughout the whole performance. Mark my words:2012 is theirs for the taking.
