Public Service Broadcasting - Inform - Educate - Entertain
ECCENTRIC LONDON DUO ALMOST GET IT RIGHT
There’s more than a slight whiff of eccentricity off this London-based duo, who call themselves J. Willgoose, Esquire and Wrigglesworth. Collectively, they’re known as Public Service Broadcasting or PSB, who make the quirks of the Pet Shop Boys look almost normal.
‘Theme From PSB’ introduces their modus operandi of hypnotic electronic hooks and loops twinned with quirky spoken word samples. A recurring theme appears to be war, the military, discovery and adventure, evident on tracks like ‘Spitfire’ and the verbal intention, “Someday, I’m going to build a plane just like a bird.”
PSB are a bit like a quirky post-rock band getting their noses dirty with Krautrock drones and the BBC archive department. It’s extremely nerdy, sometimes excessively so. There are some great ideas and melodies, but the uniformity of tone and texture (plus the over-riding feeling that this is not really going anywhere) becomes grating.
Public Service Broadcasting certainly have the promise of becoming a really great and original band, but it’ll take a little bit more than this to truly inform, educate, entertain and inspire.
Key Track: 'Everest'
