Prince's heirs sue Tidal, Jay Z's streaming service
They claim that contract with dead singer did not include all albums
Prince's label NPG Records and his beneficiaries have sued Tidal, a streaming music application by rapper Jay Z. The disagreement is over how much of Prince's back catalogue could be available to Tidal's customers.
Tidal first negotiated exclusive streaming rights to the pop star's music in 2015, earning the rights to the release of his album HITnRUN Phase One.
In a lawsuit filed in a Minnesota court where Prince resided, the beneficiaries claim that the contract did not include the rest of the pop genius's discography. In addition, the lawsuit reads that Tidal and the Roc Nation firm of Jay Z would not have "communicated" with the heirs to "expand Prince's musical offerings on the Tidal service". Roc Nation countered by claiming to have “the right to exclusively stream [Prince’s] entire catalogue of music, with certain limited exceptions”.
Prince left no will when he passed away in April. Bremer Trust, in charge of the interests of the beneficiaries, is who seek to ensure their investments stable and who negotiates with the different seals the future release of the singer's music.
